About
Great Wyrley is a civil parish located in South Staffordshire, England, with rich historical roots. Named from the Old English ‘Werlei’, meaning ‘Clearing by the Temple,’ it has a medieval history with recorded settlements dating back to the 1200s. Notably home to the Wyrley and Essington Canal, a significant local landmark often termed as the ‘Curly Wyrley,’ is a testament to the area’s industrial heritage of coal mining and lime kilns. In addition to being the scene of the infamous Great Wyrley Outrages in the late 19th century by George Edalji, a series of horse and cattle mutilations widely covered in the press. GK Chesterton, an English writer, was inspired by these events to pen down his novel ‘The Man Who Was Thursday’. In recent history, this thriving village boasts sports facilities, local pubs and Wyrley Juniors FC, one of the largest football clubs in the West Midlands.
